Lace Up & Walk - Access Music Therapy

April 6th is National Walking Day.  The American Heart Association kicks off an event every year. If your facility wants to plan ahead and make an event, they have a toolkit available here to help increase awareness and encourage your residents to do a little extra exercise in their day.

Music is a great motivator when it comes to exercise. Creating a specific playlist for exercise is very helpful in boosting your residents’  motivation and energy. Here is a playlist I’ve created:

Exercise Playlist

Lovely Hula Hands by the All Star Hawaiian Band

Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves

Tennessee Bird Walk by Jack Blanchard and Misty Morgan

Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles

Walk Right In by the Rooftop Singers

Rambling’ Rose by Nat King Cole

Walk a Mile in My Shoes by Elvis

Under the Boardwalk by The Drifters

Movement Dances

Movement dances are a great way to bring people together.

Nani Ke Ao Nei

This is a stick dance song. Here are 2 videos to learn the dance.

Adaptation: Improvise your own stick dance to the music.

Drum along to these great songs!
